Why the keyboard layout is QWERTY and not ABCDE?

Do you know, why the keyboard layout is QWERTY and not ABCDE?

If you are reading this post, I am sure that you are always in contact with keyboard, whether it is in PC or in your mobile. But have you ever notice it's order? Why it is in the order of QWERTY and not in alphabetic order?

  Think think.
  Think a little bit!

Don't worry! I am here to give the answer. Let's read the post completely.

The name of the keyboard comes from the first 6 letters of the keyboard.

Before knowing the answer, first give a look at this image. What is this?

     Is it a keyboard or....
Yes, you are right. It a typewriter.

You will be surprised to know that the keyboard layout is like this in order to decrease the speed of typing.

To understand this, you have to go to past to the time of manual typewriter. When it was first invented, it was arranged in an alphabetical. But people typed so fast that the mechanical characters get jammed. So the keys were positioned randomly in order to actually slower down the speed of typing and to prevent the jam. This meant that people typed at a speed which the machine can handle.

Many arrangements were made for this and finally the QWERTY keyboard layout was invented by Christopher Sholes. First he made a keyboard which looks like a piano with two rows of characters arranged alphabetically.

When the neighbouring arms were pressed at the same time , it cause a clash or jam.

Sholes struggled for next 5 year to perfect his invention making many trial and error rearrangements.

In his next trial, he changed the arrangement the latter half of the alphabet O to Z, right to left. Later he arrived at a four row, uppercase keyboard, moving the vowels to upper row.

The same problem was faced here, and the layout was finalised to QWERTY keyboard. He proposed that the frequently used letters should be in different rows.
This QWERTY keyboard layout was mainly made to write the morse code only but later it became so popular for it's wide use.

A question may arise in your mind that why only QWERTY and not other. You are right, later so many new layouts were invented like Dvorak, Colemark etc. . but these layouts are unable to popular as the QWERTY layout became so popular.

Today, if someone tried to use keyboard of other layout, may be he type in high speed than the QWERTY keyboard but the problem is that when he move outside he has to use QWERTY keyboard .

I think you got the answer.
