The Camera Lens is Round but the picture is Rectangle. How and Why ?

IF THE CAMERA LENSES ARE ROUND THEN HOW DO THE PICTURES ALWAYS COME OUT SQUARE?

You all are familiar with camera and surely like to click photos. But have you ever noticed that the camera lens we are using in DSLR or in our mobile is Round but the photograph is Rectangle?

 How is it possible? &
 Why it become so?

If you didn't think it before then try to think the answer and after that read the blog completely. But if you thought this question before but didn't get the answer then just Chill! Because in the coming 5 min., you will get the answer after reading this.

First of all I would like to clear you that, the Camera lens didn't click the Photograph directly. Instead there is another part inside the camera which help in it. In modern cameras, that part is called the sensor and in early days that was called the Film.

I will divide the answer in three parts:
  •  Firstly, why the lens chosen round?
  •  Secondly, why the Photograph is rectangle?
  •  And finally, How all these happens?

👉 First, let's see why the camera lens chosen round shape and why not any other shape?

This is because the focusing ability of round shape is more than any other shape. As in the round shape there is no corners, the captured photo will have more clarity.

In order to understand this you can imagine our Solar system. In solar system, the sun is in centre and the planets are revolving around it in a circular path but not in any other path. That is because, if the planets revolve in rectangular or in any other shape, then the plant at the centre will be at a larger distance than in any other place. So, the attractive force of the sun will become less when it is in corner. So, to avoid this they revolve in Circular path.

The lens in a camera is very similar to the human eye. The eye is circular and yet you don't see everything in a circular picture. Lenses can be different shapes like rectangles but these shapes are not as good at focusing light. This is why the eye, magnifying glasses and various other objects are round rather than square or rectangular

👉 Secondly let's see why the photograph is Rectangle?

If you think about displaying pictures, we usually display them on walls, which are what shape? You got it: rectangle. When it comes to framing and displaying pictures, it's much easier to use a rectangular shape, because the frames are easier to create and they're easier to display on walls of a similar shape.

So it's only natural that camera makers would have thought about making film that would create rectangular photographs. Practically, though, there was another reason. If you have ever seen film from an older camera, you know that it comes in a long strips that unwinds as pictures are taken. It's simply more efficient to use rectangular film in a camera rather than a series of round shape.

    👉 Finally, let's see how?

The important thing to understand is that the lens doesn't actually determine the shape of the picture that is produced. As light bounces off of an object you're photographing, that enters through the camera's lens. With any camera the function of  lens is only to bend and focus the light onto a screen.

So, the rectangular sensor inside the round lens crop out the outer edges of the circular images from the lens. In other words, it keeps only the best part of the image from the lens. This gives you better photographs than you would get if you kept the entire circular image from the lens.
